Hello world!

Wordle: Verb Cloud for 21st Century Learning (Griffith Uni 1074EBL 2011)

Welcome to my new blog: learning how to address the needs of the 21st century learner.  I know, I know, this is becoming an overused cliche, and we are well into the 21st century so why are we just waking up now? Well, it may well be a cliche, but finally school boards and the education ministries are discovering that what we have been doing in our schools all these decades doesn’t seem to be working anymore.  The kids in our classrooms are not the same as we were (pick a decade, any decade).

So, a flurry of blogs, articles, videos, and books are appearing everywhere as the discourse on 21st century teaching and learning heats up.  I might as well participate in the conversations and contribute rather than just observe (a lurker in the digital world).

For the past 2 years I have been a student in UBC’s MET program (Masters of Educational Technology) – a fully online masters program that deals with the subject I will be blogging about – teaching in a digital world for students who are residents of the internet.  Prenksy called them ‘digital natives” but I believe they are more than that – they live in the internet – they learn in the digital world – and they learn differently than I did.

So I will be sharing my learning, my discoveries, my challenges, and my inspirations in this blog.  Hope you’ll join me in my quest for the best pedagogy that combines what we know students need for their futures with the tools and instructional methods that suits their learning best.
